Finally! A Quick And Easy Way To Master The Arabic Alphabet

Discover The Secret That A 7-Year-Old From Yemen Taught Me And That Can Help YOU Too Read And Write Arabic Effortlessly And In Only A Few Hours...

by Max Maddocks, MPhil (Cantab)

Learning Arabic can be frustrating at times, especially with a writing system so complex. What if there was an easy way to learn the Arabic writing system quickly and effortlessly, in just a few hours? ...

... "Impossible", you say? Well, let me tell you that I would have reacted in the same way a few years ago. I still remember the frustration of spending nine long months in Arabic class learning the Arabic alphabet.

Before I enrolled, I had already successfully learned Spanish and Latin, so I thought Arabic would be a breeze.

Boy, had I been wrong! I was struggling so hard, it seemed mysterious to me how anyone could ever learn to read or write Arabic. All those little squiggles and lines just wouldn’t get into my head, no matter how hard I tried or how many times I copied out by hand each letter.

Fortunately, I found a revolutionary new learning technique that makes learning the Arabic alphabet effortless and enjoyable.

I owe a lot to this technique - without it I would never have been able to travel on my own to the remotest areas of the Middle East or to conduct research in Arabic at the University of Cambridge, gaining an MPhil degree in the process.

I want to share this secret technique with you. I refined it into a results-getting system I teach in my book The Magic Key To The Arabic Alphabet. This is the first time this secret has been made available to the general public.

By the time you have finished reading this article you will know exactly how this technique works and how you too can master the Arabic alphabet within hours...

Why should I listen to you?

Max Maddocks

As an Arabic learner I have countless years of experience of learning the language and hold an MA with distinction in Middle Eastern Studies. I know what works and what doesn't.

I've gone through thousands of pages of Arabic learning manuals, spent months enrolled in Arabic classes and had hundreds of hours of one-to-one lessons and group tuition. I've been where you've been and done what you've done - trust me!

Along the way I've made all the mistakes so that you don't have to make them now.

I've got a real passion for Arabic and the Middle East and have travelled to many countries in the region, stayed in the homes of Moroccan and Syrian families, negotiated with government officials in Afghanistan and worked in Cairo.

I'm a serial language learner and speak fluent German and Spanish as well as conversational Chinese, French and Persian. My research stems from my knowledge of psychology and practical application.

My language skills are practical and they have been tested many times. That's why I was able to develop a no-fluff method that burns the Arabic language into your long-term memory.

Because I know the frustrations of learning Arabic, I want you to read on and find out how you can use a little-known method to increase your Arabic skills exponentially...

Why is learning the Arabic script so hard?

Take a look at these three Arabic letters:

Arabic Letter "dark d" Arabic letter "French r" Arabic letter "sh"
A dark "d" sound A French "r" sound A "sh" sound

The reason why these letters seem so mysterious is that you don’t have anything similar stored in your brain to associate the sound of the letters with their shape.

If you were learning Greek, for example, you might not know immediately that the letter that looks like our p is actually pronounced like an r. But at least you would have no problem in remembering the shape of the letter, because you have seen this shape many many times in English.

Now, the Arabic letters are different – none of the shapes occur in the English alphabet. So there’s nothing for you to associate the letters with. Nothing, that is until you read on to find out exactly what to do to overcome this problem...

What a 7-year old Yemeni boy taught me about Arabic...and how it can help you too!

I thought long and hard about this problem, but it was only through a chance encounter with a 7-year-old boy in Yemen that I finally found the answer.

After a long morning of hitchhiking to a little village to the West of the capital Sana'a I was taking a stroll down a small lane, followed by a group of young children who were all amazed at seeing a Westerner.

To disperse the little crowd I took out a few pens and distributed them among the children. For some reason, Yemeni children are really mad about pens and will follow you to no end with chants of "qalam, qalam" (pen, pen!).

Ok, the truth is, it didn't work - those children were still following me after I gave them my pens.

I switched tactics and tried engaging them with my rudimentary Arabic. They were quite impressed to hear a Westerner speak Arabic. One of the boys who it seemed were on their way back home from school was keen to show off his text book to me.

When I looked through the book this 7-year-old showed me I realized that I hit gold...

...You see, Arab children are practically in the same position as us when we are starting out to learn the Arabic alphabet. They too don’t have any prior associations of the shapes in their minds.

This is why some clever Yemeni primary school teacher must have come up with the idea of associating the shape of the letters with the shape of animals the children already know.

In the picture below on the left you can see the Arabic letter for “n” and on the right the picture of a bee that incorporates the shape of the letter.

Arabic Letter "n" Arabic "bee"

Now, “bee” in Arabic is nahla. The children associate the shape of the letter with the shape of the bee. And when they see the shape of the letter they think back to the bee and know that it is an “n” sound, because nahla (bee) starts with an “n” sound.

Of course, this only works for Arab children who already know that nahla means “bee”. It doesn’t work for us, because we don’t know these Arabic words yet.

That's why I took this method, made it suitable for non-Arabs and refined it into a step-by-step system that you can use to fast track your Arabic learning:

Read on to learn your first two Arabic letters right here...

Let me demonstrate the power of the method to you now and proof to you that you can learn your first two Arabic letters in the next 3 minutes...

...look at the example below. On the left you see the Arabic letter for “n” again, on the right you see a person with a big belly and a visible navel.

Arabic Letter "n" Arabic letter "n" memory aid

Now, close your eyes and visualize the image in your mind for a few seconds. Whenever you will see the Arabic “n” you will immediately think back to the big belly with the navel, which in turn reminds you that the shape you see before you is the Arabic “n” sound.

Here is how to draw the letter: start from the right and draw a circle that is open at the top. Then simply add a dot on top. Arabic Letter "n" drawn

Easy, right? Try another letter...

How would you like to try another letter? This time it's the Arabic letter for "m". The letter looks like a mouse, with the little circle of the letter being the main body of the mouse and the long downwards stroke being the mouse's tail.

Arabic Letter "b" Memory Aid For "m"

Now try drawing the letter yourself. Start at the top and draw a small circle. Then, add a little line to the left and a long downward stroke.

Arabic letter "m" drawn

As you can see this method does NOT rely on hours of excruciating rote memorization. It is a fun and easy way to start out on your Arabic language learning journey.

All Arabic books teaching the Alphabet which I have come across so far have introduced it the way you would to an Arabic speaker. Yours is the only one that does it from a non-native speaker's perspective.

What if you just want to learn how to speak Arabic?

You might ask yourself why you should learn to read and write if you're only interested in speaking Arabic.

This is a valid question and one that I get asked a lot. In fact, I myself enjoy chatting with the locals much more than reading literature...

...but, even if you are only interested in speaking Arabic you should still learn to read and write the language. Here are the powerful reasons for this:
